Chapter 15: Sakyrrainth

Written by Salya
53 years ago, Southern Mountains

Sinta was out on a run when he found an odd cave in the southern mountains. He sniffed around and as he wondered into the cave. After a while, he smelled something odd. It smelled like a dragon...and that alone confused him. He only knew of Kamui that was in those mountains, but this scent wasn’t Kamui’s. He walked deeper into the cave then stopped. What he saw shocked him more. A white dragon!

In front of the 4-tailed fox, laid a huge white dragon. White almost shiny scales with huge wings and horns on it’s head. As if it sense the fox, it lifted up it’s massive head and opened it’s icy blue eyes to look over at the fox. It let out a light yawn then sat up. It looked down at the fox and tilted it’s head. “What is a fox doing here?” It said. It sounded like a male.

Sinta wasn't sure what to do. He didn't know of any other dragons in the southern mountains or any other white dragons. "Does Nall know about this?" he wondered as he sat there, gazing up at the dragon.

The dragon, however, was simply yawning and appearing bored. He lost interest in the fox, who was just staring at him. He lowered his head onto his front paws and let out a small puff of smoke.

The fox then had an idea. He got up and ran out of the cave, and the dragon didn’t seem to notice. A few days later, the fox returned with his princess. Mira gasped when she saw the dragon and hid behind Sinta, who was in his humanoid form.

Sinta let out a gentle sigh, recalling how she felt an intense fear of dragons, which often made her anxious around any depiction of them. After a brief pause to gather his thoughts, he tenderly pulled her closer, positioning her in front of him to confront her fears directly. “Mira, this dragon won't harm you. It seems calm, just like Kamui.”

Mira glanced anxiously from the imposing dragon, which seemed to be intently observing them with its sharp eyes, and then turned her gaze to Sinta, seeking reassurance. "It... won't hurt me...? Are you really sure about that?" Her voice trembled slightly, reflecting her deep concern and the inherent danger of their situation as she awaited Sinta's response with palpable fear. The tension in the air was thick, as the dragon's presence loomed large over them, heightening Mira's apprehension.

As the fox and princess conversed, the dragon observed them. He paused for a moment and then transformed into his humanoid form. Where the massive dragon had lain was now a tall, handsome male with pale skin, long white hair, and icy blue eyes. He was dressed in white robes. Realizing that the girl was likely the princess of the realm, he approached her and knelt before her, causing Mira to flinch slightly, as she was not accustomed to anyone acting in such a manner.

Mira pressed herself against Sinta for comfort and support, her heart racing as she gazed down at the imposing dragon below them. The creature's presence was both awe-inspiring and terrifying, causing her to feel a mix of fear and admiration. "Y-you don't have to do that..." she whispered, her voice trembling with apprehension, as she was unsure if Sinta really needed to confront or engage with the magnificent beast. In this moment, Mira sought reassurance, hoping that her companion would prioritize their safety over any sudden brave decisions.

"Yes, I understand your point... but are you not, in fact, the princess of this realm?" the dragon replied, quite cautiously, keeping his head respectfully lowered. This indicated his recognition of her royal status and the weight of her position in the realm. The dragon's demeanor suggested he held great respect for her, even in a possibly confrontational situation. His words seemed to carry a hint of awe, reflecting the complex dynamics between them.

Sinta hugged her from behind as he replied for her, "She is one of two princesses. This is Mira, the princess of the Southern lands, where those mountains are located."

The dragon looked up with a hint of confusion, blinking slowly as it processed the unexpected information. "Two princesses...?" He muttered, his voice weaving in disbelief as he tried to comprehend the significance of having not just one, but two royal damsels in the realm.

Mira nodded in agreement, confirming the statement with a hint of pride. "Yeah... My sister and I are the two princesses of Elyasia," she explained, indicating the special legacy they bear. "Our mother and my aunt were the princesses before us," she added, emphasizing the continuity of royalty in their family, highlighting the longstanding tradition that they are now part of.

Sakyrrainth's eyes widened. "So, the war is over?" The dragon gazed past them at the cave wall, as if attempting to reconstruct memories from long ago. "How long have I been asleep?"

The girl blinked in surprise, processing the weight of the conversation, and then she nodded slowly in agreement. "Yes... Lyne ended the war before I was born..." she affirmed, indicating her understanding of the historical significance of Lyne's actions and how the high mage shaped the world she grew up in. This acknowledgment hinted at her curiosity about the past and the impact of such pivotal events on her own life.

This left the dragon in a state of confusion. Sinta then explained everything he knew about what had happened, much of it learned from Lyne. After a while, the dragon let out a small hum before standing up. "I see... I'm Sakyrrainth."

Mira blinked in surprise at the unique sight before her. "Sakyrra..." she started, her curiosity piqued, "Is it okay if I call you Snow, since your scales are white like snow?" The name seemed fitting, evoking the pure, serene beauty associated with fresh snowfall.

Sakyrrainth blinked, indicating a brief moment of surprise or realization, and then paused to think for a moment, clearly reflecting on the situation at hand. "Sure," Sakyrrainth continued, with a sense of understanding in their voice. "I don't really mind... since dragon names are notoriously difficult for humans to pronounce correctly." This acknowledgment highlights the unique challenges that arise when different species interact and communicate.

After some more conversation, Mira suddenly had an idea. "Snow, would you like to be one of my knights?"

He looked a bit confused, so Sinta explained the situation with the guards and what the two princesses had planned. After giving it some thought, Sakyrrainth nodded and said, "Sure, my lady."

~Present time~

Sakyrrainth awoke from his slumber and, with a deep and wide yawn, shook off the remnants of sleep. Rising to his full height, he stretched his limbs and expansive wings with the grace of a giant cat, preparing himself for the day ahead before stepping out of his cozy cave. He took a moment to glance down at the small fox, whose presence sparked a flicker of recognition and curiosity within him. "Sinta..." he murmured, acknowledging the fox.

Sinta sat there, gazing up at the massive dragon. "I see that you are awake now, Snow."

The dragon settled down and folded his wings in a relaxed manner, creating a serene atmosphere around him. "How is our princess?" Is she still afraid of dragons?" he inquired with genuine curiosity, reflecting on their past encounters. He understood Mira's feelings about dragons. He had noticed her initial fear and hesitation, but surprisingly, it didn’t bother him at all; he actually found her feelings pretty interesting. It showed just how complicated their realm was, where even powerful creatures could inspire both fear and wonder.

The fox let out a soft chuckle. "Mira's actually doing pretty well after everything that's happened recently. And yeah, she’s still afraid of dragons, but weirdly, she doesn’t seem scared of Nall or you."

The dragon let out a soft hum. "I see... I suppose I'll go check on her then."

Sinta hummed softly as he contemplated. "That might be wise. If you do that, I'm going to continue my run." With that, he resumed his run.

Sakyrrainth rose into the sky and flew to the southern castle, where he landed nearby, transforming into his humanoid form. He entered the castle, ignoring the staff as he searched for Mira. Fortunately, he didn't have to look long; as soon as she spotted him, Mira rushed over and embraced him, with Nall flying nearby. He returned her hug, humming softly in response.

She glanced up at him with a faint smile. "Welcome back, Snow."
